About This Action:

Protects historical or cultural sites on tillage land.

Why:

  • Protects monuments left by our ancestors, helps preserve them for future generations.
  1. Establish a 10m wide grass margin around the monument. Min till only if grass has to be sown. 
  2. Grass can be mown if you take care 
  3. Grass can be grazed but install a fence if there is any risk of damage to the monument. 
  4. Control Encroaching vegetation with hand tools. Roots cannot be removed. 
  5. No use of pesticides or herbicides. 
  6. This action does not require a right of access for the General Public.

Implementation Notes

The monument must be visible and on the participants land. 

Avoid Soil disturbance, keep vehicles and heavy livestock away from monument. 

Scrub removal with hand tools only.

 

Good Locations:

  • Any Archaeological Monument visible above ground in an arable field

 

Poor Locations:

  • Monument no longer visible
  • Monument in an adjoining property even if buffer extends into participants land

Do I have to fence off the monument?

No, Fencing is not required on arable land provided animals are never present.

There is a monument marked on the map but I cannot see it, can I still avail of this action?

If the monument is not visible on the surface then it is not eligible for this NPI.

What do I have to do in the vicinity of the monument?

The main requirement is to remove scrub growing on the site, you can only use hand tools for this task. Work cannot be carried out during the bird nesting season. Seek advice from the CP team archaeologist if large trees are present. You must maintain a 10m grass margin around the monument.
