Implementation Notes

Assess water supply, is it reliable and safe ? .

Do not locate Pasture Pumps within 20m of a drain or watercourse.

Additional Guidance

• The bed of the watercourse should not be disturbed in any circumstances. The banks of the watercourse should also not be disturbed where possible. The inlet pipe must not be allowed to lie on the bank or river bed, it will not work properly and will suck up sediment as well as water. Secure it to a vertical post or anchored with a weight instead.

• The pump should abstract water from a watercourse or waterbody with an adequate supply – inadequate supply can lead to environmental issues, poor quality water supply, and pump failure.

 • Appropriate safety measures should be taken when working near water during the installation and maintenance of the pump. Lone working is discouraged, and personal flotation devices may be required when working beside large, deep or fast-flowing watercourses.

Good Locations:

  • Grassland or rough grazing fields more than 20m from a drain or watercourse

Poor Locations:

  • Areas without a suitable water source (river or stream).
  • Where water has to be lifted more than 6m.
  • Where water has to be transported more than 50m horizontally.

Will all cattle be able to use the Pasture Pump?

Most cattle will adapt to using the pasture pump.

Where should I locate a pasture pump?

Locate the pump at least 20m from a watercourse. The pasture pump is only suitable for fields that have their own water source.

How far can the pasture pump lift water from the source?

The pasture pump can lift water at least 7m vertically and 70m horizontally.
