Holly – A Christmas tradition and Wildlife Resource
Holly is one of our few native evergreen trees. The long association with Christmas is perhaps a follow on from the important role that the tree had in Brehon law and tradition. Holly was one of the seven noble trees of the forest along with Oak, Hazel, Yew, Ash, Pine and Apple.
The presence of Holly adds significantly to the value of Hedges and woodlands to wildlife. While it was not realistic to insist on planting Holly in new hedges and small woodlands Non Productive Investment in ACRES. its inclusion will be encouraged wherever it is feasible.
